Conference Program

Because of the need to apply content technologies throughout enterprises, the variety of business applications involved, and the diversity of relevant content technologies, companies typically need to implement solutions that must interact with multiple departments. It is critical for each of these departments to be educated enough to makes decisions. Thus we encourage companies to send representatives from all departments effected by enterprise content applications and have created an educational program that will effectively meet the needs of diverse enterprise teams.

GILBANE CONFERENCE TRACKS:

Content Management Track (CM)
Track Chair: Tony White, Lead Analyst, Web Content Management, Gilbane Group
While every enterprise content management strategy needs to include a web component, there are a wide range of additional requirements for managing content throughout an organization. Multi-channel publishing, compliance, document management, archiving, brand management, and enterprise digital rights and rules management (e-DRM) are just some examples. In addition, there are approaches and technologies for building and managing content infrastructures that can apply to all content applications. This track is focused on strategies and technologies for managing multiple types of content, either with different types of repository systems, or with supporting technologies. IT and business strategists, and all types of content managers will benefit from specific sessions in this track. Be sure to also look at the the sessions in our WCM track when planning your schedule.*

Web Content Management Track (WCM)
Track Chair: Tony White, Lead Analyst, Web Content Management, Gilbane Group
Web content management shares many of the same technologies, workflows and strategies as other content management applications that focus on, for example, documents, or digital assets. In fact, there is usually also an opportunity to share, re-use, or re-purpose content across multiple types of content management applications. However, WCM has a number of unique characteristics, including design, authoring tools, usability, and analytics, among others. In addition, although all organizations have some experience with WCM, and medium-to-large organizations sometimes have hundreds of websites, WCM as a discipline, is still in its infancy - there is more for everyone to learn as we gain more experience. If you are responsible for a website, or the content management system or strategy behind your organization's web presence, this entire track will be relevant to you.

Enterprise Search Track (ES)
Track Chair: Lynda Moulton, Lead Analyst, Enterprise Search, Gilbane Group
Content that can’t be found by those who created it or those in the enterprise who need it to perform any aspect of their jobs has no value. Billions of enterprise IT dollars are being spent on capturing content in Office applications, databases, and in specialized applications (e.g. CAD, imaging, video and voice recording). Embedded search in these applications usually provides a few limited options for finding content within the application. Having accumulated vast repositories of content, enterprises are now spending millions in attempts to search across these stores in a single interface, with aggregated results that are meaningfully presented. Commercial solutions, independent of specific applications, offer one option but even these are not so easily categorized. Sessions will place the focus on the types of search problems enterprises have and need to solve by examining both cases and the technologies being turned to in medium and large organizations. How organizations make choices about what types of products to select and implement will also be explored in this track.

Collaboration & Enterprise Blogs & Wikis Track (CBW)
Track Chair: Geoffrey Bock, Lead Analyst, Collaboration, Gilbane Group
We have been covering the use of blog and wiki technologies for enterprise applications since we reported on early examples of organizations successfully using these tools in early 2005. While definitive quantitative research is just starting to appear, it is clear that these technologies have since been widely deployed in enterprises of all sizes across vertical industries, and collaboration is one of, if not the number one, reason they are implemented. This track will bring you up-to-speed on the technologies, why companies are using them, and what kinds of enterprise applications such "social software" is appropriate for.

Publishing Technology and Best Practices: The Future is Now (PTS)
Track Chairs: Steve Paxhia, General Manager & Thad McIlroy, Senior Analyst, Publishing Technology & Strategy, Gilbane Group
Publishing professionals working in traditional publishing companies or in publishing entities inside corporations are facing a new set of opportunities and challenges. There is a constant stream of new technology options that could have a profound impact on their publishing processes. Customers are demanding that intellectual property be delivered to the in the media that they prefer and they may require multiple media forms of the same content. And there are increasing opportunities to profit from efficient delivery of content to the international market. The trend towards online communities and the increased deployment of collaboration technologies enables new methodologies for authoring and reviewing. These sessions will help publishing professionals to consider these future trends and developments - now.

* Sometimes all these requirements are referred to as ECM. Why do we use CM and not ECM? Unfortunately, there is not enough careful distinction in the industry between ECM strategy and ECM system. Useful debate and consensus about ECM strategies are possible, where debates about ECM systems contribute little as they typically degenerate into discussions about competing product-specific feature sets. Not using enterprise as part of the noun phrase partially alleviates this confusion.
